DIY Decor: How To Paint Exotic Style & Why Indigenous Decor?

It is Fall and around the corner is November with Thanksgiving. During this holiday season, some Americans choose to give more thought and reverence toward the original peoples of our planet, especially those that lived on this land we now call North America. There have been recent archaeological discoveries that have negated the previously hypothesized human timeline. Skeletal finds are now placing humans or humanoids as walking this land many more thousands of years prior to previously believed. Though scientists are constantly digging throughout the Earth for answers, there are many solutions and useful ideas from our predecessors that are already uncovered. If we only look, listen, and pay attention, answers abound ranging from ways to interact with our environment, to healthy foods and herbs, to socio-political structures.
That said, one fun way to celebrate our indigenous roots, is to have a piece of decor that nods to an indigenous existence. The artwork and decoration which surrounds our home can remind us of those who lived hand in hand with the earth. Many folks like to collect artifacts, whether pre-history or just an antique - a few hundred years old, they are all symbolic of where we came from and where we are going.
Many decor projects fare well when the paint palette and styling chosen by the painter complements the piece being painted. In the "How To" videos below, painter Alaina Williams chooses earth tones that would resemble natural hues an indigenous people might use. She paints with a creamy yellow, a hand mixed marsala [red brown], green, black, and gold gilt.
When you begin your project, you may want to watch Pt.1 once through. Then after your first viewing, you can complete most of the painting on your own, then return for another Paint Along viewing to get cues on how to most effectively complete your project. Follow along with your own exotic themed painting projects, as Alaina demonstrates hand-painting an Indonesian candle holder in Pt.1 of this Two Part Paint Along.
